    All About Raksha Bandhan 2024

    \r\n

Raksha Bandhan also known as Rakhi is a cherished festival that celebrates the bond shared by sisters and brothers. In 2024, Rakhi will be celebrated on the 19th of August with a thread ceremony time - from 01:30 PM to 09:08 PM. This time slot is best for Rakhi rituals and celebrations allowing everyone to enjoy the festival and share some laughter with family.

    \r\n

    How Rakhi is Celebrated?

    \r\n

Rakhi is a festival steeped in tradition and love; celebrated with enthusiasm by Indian communities worldwide. “Raksha Bandhan” translates to “the bond of protection” dedicated to the protective bond between siblings.

    \r\n

The day begins when sisters decorate a thali with a beautiful Rakhi, roli (red vermilion), rice grains, a diya and their brother’s favourite sweets. The ritual further starts with her tying a Rakhi to her brother’s wrist while praying for his long life and well-being. In return, the brother vows to protect her and shower her with thoughtful gifts as a token of his love. The celebration continues with a family feast including delicious sweets and dishes adding more to the day. Most importantly, Rakhi is not only just limited to siblings by blood; it is a ritual celebrated with cousins and close friends as well.

    \r\n

    History and Significance of Rakhi

    \r\n

The significance of Rakhi can be traced back to ancient times with many historical and mythological stories.

    \r\n

One of the most popular stories is from Mahabharata. When Lord Krishna injured his finger, Draupadi tore a piece of her saree to tie it to the wound and stopped the bleeding. Touched by her gesture, Lord Krishna promised to protect her always and stood by his words by protecting her in the court of King Dhritrashtra. When Dushasan; one of the Kauravas tried to disrobe Draupadi, he miraculously extended her saree ensuring she remained clothed. This act of divine intervention reinforced the sacred bond of protection symbolising the essence of Raksha Bandhan.
Moreover, Rakhi also holds significance in India’s fight for Independence. During the partition of Bengal in 1905, Rabindranath Tagore promoted unity and harmony by encouraging Hindus and Muslims to tie Rakhis to each other promoting brotherhood and solidarity.

    \r\n

In essence, Rakhi is a celebration of love and protection primarily between siblings but it also extends to cousins, close friends and anyone you hold closer. As we celebrate Rakhi in 2024, let us all enjoy the spirit of this beautiful festival cherishing the bonds that make our lives meaningful.
